Naples Music Club Announces Its 2013 Scholarship Winners

By Chris Statton

The Naples Music Club’s annual community event took place this year on Saturday, April 27th at the First United Methodist Church of Naples. It was the club’s Scholarship Winners’ Recital, chaired by Jan Grundeman, at which 15 students performed before a large, appreciative audience. The results of the club’s annual scholarship competition, completed two weeks earlier, determined the 41 winners who were awarded the monetary Scholarships. Students, all of whom must be in middle school or high school, use their winnings for college, summer music camps, study with private teachers, or for instruments.

This Naples Music Club’s Scholarship Program has flourished since 1970, with $37,000.00 dollars awarded to 53 students this year and a total of over $500,000 during the past 43 years of the program’s existence.

Capturing the Club’s most coveted award, the Turiel Award, was Joseph Peliska, an honor student. This award is given annually to a high school senior who best meets a number of criteria (including grades and an essay.)  For Saturday’s recital, Joseph played Sevilla by Isaac Albéniz, for which he received a standing ovation.

Joseph has been playing the classical guitar since he was seven. He is currently studying with Rafael Pardon at the University of Miami. Joseph is a four time scholarship winner of the Naples Music Club, plays regularly for the Naples Botanical Gardens, and teaches classical guitar. Joseph has also appeared as a guest soloist with the 5th Avenue Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Maestro William Noll. Joseph has won numerous competitions, including top prizes with the Naples Music Club Annual Scholarship Competitions and the University of Miami Youth Guitar Competition. He teaches classical guitar through his private studio in Naples. In fact, he has concentrated the last two years on  teaching classical guitar. Three of his students received scholarships from the Naples Music Club this year. Joseph will be going to PepperdineUniversity and studying with Christopher Parkening. When asked who will teach his students in the future, he said that he was still working on it but he might use Skype. (Click here to read an article on Joseph in the Naples Daily News)
