Janet Grundeman was born Janet Aileen Woodman in Highland Park, Michigan on George Washington’s birthday. In 1960, she started her university music education with Mary Chelf Jones at Michigan State University and followed her to Washburn University of Topeka, Topeka, Kansas, to complete her studies. At Washburn, she was mentored by Ms. Jones and studied with Gordon Gaines. She sang with the Washburn Singers and the University Chorus and after her senior recital, she graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Applied Voice.
Her first day at Washburn she met Fred Grundeman. They were married in 1963, and upon Jan’s graduation moved to Wichita, Kansas. In 1967 they moved to the Dale City area of Washington, D.C. There her involvement included the Dale City Jaycee Wives, the Dale City Civic Association, Cub Scout Den Leader, and room mother and substitute teacher, all the while teaching private voice lessons and directinf church choirs. During this time she was also involved in the success of the Woodbridge Community Choir as director for 4 years, serving on the board and establishing the Woodbridge Children’s Choir. Additionally, she served as president of Bel Air Woman’s Club and initiated the Student Art Show. She also served in various leadership capacities as a member of the Woodbridge Music Club and the Springfield Music Club. Jan is a Life Member of Sigma Alpha Iota Professional Music Fraternity.
In 1987, Jan was hired as the first paid Director of Music of First United Presbyterian Church of D.C. During her 19 years there, she directed the Chancel Choir weekly. She started the Youth Choir in 1988 with “Friends Forever.” Her responsibilities, generally, were to work with all-volunteer directors and be involved with directing, music selection and their choirs as needed, and while she was there, she led fundraising efforts for the purchase of handbells, an organ and a keyboard.
During the summer of 2006, Jan and her husband relocated to Naples, Florida, where one of their two sons, Eric, lives with his wife and two children.
